Ok this is a rant... after coming off the phone with Canon this my last resort and spleen vent.
After always buying Nikon we recently switched allegiances and bought a Canon IXUS-80 from Kmart in Helensvale for the birth of my 2nd child - it was about $250. After about a couple of months the lens decided to jam. My wife did a search on the net and this is one of the most common problems experienced with this camera - tried all the suggested solutions with no luck. Anyway - we thought "No problem" let's just take it back to Kmart and get a new one... I have always been very impressed with Kmart's no-fuss exchange policy and is probably the number 1 reason I shop at stores like this.
Anyway - for the first time ever, Kmart actually sent the thing away for repair... and we have been waiting several weeks for it now and my wife has been pulling her hair out as she has no camera to take pictures of my daughter. The camera just came back from Canon saying there was "Foreign Body" inside the camera and that we had to pay $200 to get it repaired OR $50 quotation fee to get it back!!
I phoned Canon - apparently there was sand in the camera (why didn't they say that on the quote???) and warranty is invalid. I don't know how there is sand in there - the camera was only at the hospital and home, but meh. She also adamantly denied that they charge $50 quotation fee but it's right there on the piece of paper....
Anyway - not very helpful, and they aren't budging - so all I can now do is buy another (not canon) camera from a store other than Kmart. Shame - the camera was pretty good until this - but I gather from the net there are a lot of problems with this camera lens and if Canon is like this with warranty, then buyer beware!
Very disappointed Canon. Nikon - you have me back as a customer.... WE LOVE YOU NIKON, WE LOVE YOU NIKON! Wish I'd just bought another right at the start now... missed a lot of good photos that are pretty much priceless.
Hopefully this blog post will get some google rank and take some business away from them.

Canon IXUS
I have a Canon IXUS, its just too small for me
Me too...
Just received that paper (sand inside the camera) in Germany too. We had that IXUS 80 two month and kept an eye on that thing. Suddenly the lens didn`t work anymore.
Repairing cost is as much as a new camera. The call center agent (I asked for the reason and some images) seems to be well prepared... So Canaon, bye!
Canon IXUS
Pity... I love my Canon IXUS 60. It's handy, functional, solid, excellent lens and flash... before this it was an IXUS V3. Never a worry.
Sand is easy to get into a camera if, for instance, you put it in a handbag or backpack.
We always kept it in it's
We always kept it in it's pouch. The only place I can think of is Carla's bag which does go on the beach weddings and might have sand in it. Funny thing is that we had a casio before that went in the same place (and actually did go on the beach a lot) and we never had a problem with it - in fact it's still working, we gave it to the in-laws and they still use it a lot. Maybe the Canons are particularly susceptible to this problem.
That does suck
That's pretty crappy.
I've had a similar fault on two Canons - however on both occasions they have been repaired under warranty, no questions asked.
Maybe some difference between the Australian and British operations?
Sorry - correction - it was
Sorry - correction - it was the IXUS-80
That sucks Steve. I have
That sucks Steve. I have that exact camera and haven't had any problems with it yet. But it does make a little grinding noise then the lens extends out. Lets hope its not sand!
Its unfortunate though as (I believe) Canon make great products!
